Pictures in Wood http://WisconsinVisualArtists.com/public/exhibit_full.php?user_id=1761 http://WisconsinVisualArtists.com/public/exhibit_full.php?user_id=1761 Artist Joan White has been called a \"visionary\". Using wood as her \"canvas\", White layers oil paint to achieve transparent, multidimensional images of animals and nature inspired by the knots, grain, coloring and shape of the wood she paints. Joan\'s works sometimes addresses environmental issues and always shows the beauty of the forest in which she lives and more exotic places that she visits. Sat, 04 Feb 2012 00:00:00 -0500 All That Glitters http://WisconsinVisualArtists.com/public/exhibit_full.php?user_id=1764 http://WisconsinVisualArtists.com/public/exhibit_full.php?user_id=1764 All That Glitters depicts the simplicity of form and glimmer of glass in contemporary cold-worked sculpture. Artists invite viewers to experience the sensuality of light as it is manipulated and transformed into color and pattern. Artists were selected based on the visual effects of their sculpture and the common theme of working in the cold glass methods of polishing, cutting, laminating and faceting. This work exploits the reflective and transmissive qualities of light that glass manages like no other material, except perhaps, diamonds. All That Glitters includes work from Christopher Ries, Kreg Kallenberger, Toland Sand, Sidney Hutter, David Huchthausen, Jon Kuhn, Michael Taylor and Donald Friedlich. All That Glitters, kicks off a year of celebration of this idea that Glass can be an artistic and expressive medium. The exhibition opens this fall, as a prelude to the endless possibilities of glass expression planned for 2012, a year nationwide, to celebrate the American Studio Glass Movement. This movement began humbly in a garage in Toledo, Ohio in 1962 with a workshop led by Harvey Littleton and Dominick Labino and exploded into a worldwide phenomenon. Many of these are smaller figural paintings that explore themes inspired by Process modes of thought. In Process Theory or Philosophy, \"beauty\" is the essential draw or \"divine lure\" that pulls existence toward novelty. It is experienced as the harmonious feeling of joy that is possible, given whatever variables exist at the moment. Truly creative growth, advance, and evolutionary development occurs at the edge of chaos, where intensity concentrates the experience. Creative movement and expression may often occur against the inertia of cultural norms: \"Against the Wind\". This annual exhibition has been held each year (with a few exceptions) since it was established by Museum Director Earl G. Wright in 1942. Paintings, drawings, original prints, photographs, sculpture, and ceramics were all entered by artists living throughout Northeast Wisconsin and Michigan\'s Upper Peninsula. Always highly competitive, only one in three or sometimes only one in two artworks entered were selected for the exhibition. This year's juror is Randall Berndt, co-director and curator at the James Watrous Gallery of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters in the Overture Center for the Arts, Madison, WI. Sat, 04 Feb 2012 00:00:00 -0500 Overture Center for the Arts Exhibition of the Collaborationists http://WisconsinVisualArtists.com/public/exhibit_full.php?user_id=1835 http://WisconsinVisualArtists.com/public/exhibit_full.php?user_id=1835 The Collaborationists As members of Arts Immersion (AIm), a Madison group of creative artists, four members formed a sub-group to move beyond discussion into actual participatory art creation. The 23 works in this exhibition represent 15 weeks of collaboration. Calling themselves the The Collaborationists, they began by meeting weekly, each with 3 stimulus works to present to the others. They worked on the pieces they had selected and then the following week handed them off to one of the others in their group. Individually they contributed to the work\'s development as they saw fit, while also critiquing and discussing their thoughts and feelings at weekly meetings. They continued to work on a piece until they had arrived at a consensus of completion. The final results reflect their individually unique aesthetics, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives while representing cohesion of more universally shared artistic sensibilities. All members of The Collaborationists live in Madison, although they come from diverse cultural backgrounds. They are well travelled, having lived, worked and exhibited worldwide. Members of the quartet include Mats Rudels (from Sweden), Kalpana Prakash (from India), Scott Lesh (a Chicago native) and Russell Gardner (reared in rural Wisconsin). They delight in using common materials and found objects. They draw, paint, sculpt, assemble, frame, and mount image-arrangements in conventional and novel formats. They share an immense appreciation of and exposure to art, art history and its techniques. They vary in schooling and life experience as well as the way they articulate their individual styles and values, yet find consensus on the product-completion or what needs yet to happen. This curiosity in each other's visual language has been the core component of their interactions as collaborators. In their meetings they discuss how the work changed between sessions. Collaborationist artworks grow with no pre-ordained theme. Each artist has the freedom to contribute what is his/her creative impulse at the time. Inevitably as the work progresses they begin to interact with each other's contribution in much the same way one carries on a conversation or that occurs with improvisatory jazz. Sometimes they found that what initially seemed discordant served to enhance the resulting visual achievement. They realize that despite great variation in their worldwide experience of culture, psychology, history and personal lives, they feel amazing consensus on common human problems that pervade their completed collaborations. The spectrum of human struggle and achievement resonate in the art they create. In each work are left the emotional, intellectual and physical marks of four individuals who have joined to create a unified and universal expression. Both metaphorically and actually they represent human diversity with the goal to create unity. It is their hope that such an endeavor can serve as a visual bridge of inspiration to the public at large. An opening reception will be held on Gallery Night & Day, Friday, January 20, 2012 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 11:00am to 5:00pm. The exhibit will run through April 14, 2012. The gallery is located at 1024 E. State St. at Prospect Ave. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Batet, born in Barcelona, Spain, studied famous French impressionistic painters in Paris. His classic School of Paris Series recalls the spirit of Paris in the 1920's and 1930's. Batet has exhibited throughout the world including France, U.S.A., Japan, Belgium, Germany, England, Korea, Australia and South Africa. In addition to being a master printmaker, he has illustrated over 100 books. Lester Johnson (Second Generation New York School, Born 1919, Died 2010) taught figure drawing at Yale until his retirement in 1989. A maverick associate of the Abstract Expressionists in New York, he found his subject matter in the joys and sorrows of ordinary people on the street featured in the Street Scene Portfolio. He paints women in colorful print dresses and men wearing bowler hats and baseball caps. Born in 1927, world renowned French artist, Claude Weisbuch was at a very early age able to ally an eminently classical style with a very contemporary satirical sense through movement and setting. Among his favorite subjects are Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Don Quixote, horses and musical themes. The portfolio series featured in this exhibit is titled "Homage to Leonardo da Vinci". Established in 1966, the David Barnett Gallery is Wisconsin's premier gallery and has the broadest range of art available in any Wisconsin gallery, including works of art that represent more than 600 artists. The gallery specializes in European and American masters, regional and nationally recognized artists, and "emerging" Wisconsin artists. Latin American, Asian, and African American artists also adorn the gallery along with Ethnographic art from Africa, Indonesia, and Oceania. The gallery has a national reputation for its extensive collection of Picasso ceramics and Milton Avery oil paintings. In addition, the David Barnett Gallery provides professional art consultation, appraisals, restoration and conservation, framing, lighting, custom giclee printing, delivery, and installation services. The gallery's Van Go mobile art service brings artwork to residences and offices for "on location" selection. Viewing hours at the David Barnett Gallery are 11:00am to 5:30pm Tuesday through Friday, 11:00am to 5:00pm Saturday, or by appointment. For further information, please call (414) 271-5058.
